Agapios Agapiou

Agapios Agapiou

Agapios was born in Kato-Drys, a small village near Lefkara, in the Larnaca district of Cyprus.

He graduated from the Pancyprian Gymnasium (Kentrikon) in Lefkosia. Soon after he was drafted into the National Guard and was stationed at Stavros tis Psokas attending telecommunications.

After being discharged from the army, he travelled to New York City for University studies. He did his undergraduate studies at CUNY while working at a restaurant as a waiter to pay for expenses. He pursuit graduate work at New York University where he was awarded an MS in Chemistry and a Ph.D. in Organometallic Chemistry. After that he did 1 year of Postdoctoral studies at Princeton University where he specialized in Catalysis.

He then spent 6 years working for Dart Industries in Paramus N.J. developing 2nd and 3rd generation catalysts for polyolefins, after which he was recruited by Exxon Chemical Co to head the polyolefins Catalyst group at their new research center in Houston.

Agapios his wife Ana and their son Kyriacos moved to Houston in early 1982. Their daughter Teresa was born soon after.

Agapios spent 30 years at ExxonMobil in various assignments until his retirement. He is currently doing some consulting work at ExxonMobil and spends summers with Ana at his house in beautiful Kato-Drys.
